:?: Does the same general guideline apply for adding honey supers as it does for adding brood supers? I added the second deep to my new hives and I was wondering how long to wait until adding the mediums that will be my honey supers. Should I wait until the deeps are almost full? Some of the posts about the honey flow coming on fast concern me that I will crowd my bees. On a related note, do you add one honey super at a time, or can you stack a couple on there and let them alone for a while? My brood boxes seem to be doing fine and if I can minimize the disturbances to the hive by adding two honey supers, just let me know.
i am new too, but it is my understanding that if you add multiple honey supers on together, the bees will partially fill all the supers(known as the chimney effect or chimneying???) instead of filling an entire super. also you should wait untill the 2nd deep is almost full to add your honey supers so you dont chill the brood, i guess that is another reason for not putting multiple honey supers on as well.
Yes Charles, the same rule applies, if your referring to adding new boxes of foundation. If you have brood boxes or honey supers that contain drawn comb, it is not quite as imperitive to wait. The bees do preferr to use drawn comb first, abandoning foundation if given a choice of drawn comb.
