Title: Bees with Heads in Cells
Post by: neurobee on May 23, 2011, 03:01:08 PM
I started my hive out as a package. Recently in one of my inspections I noticed that one frame (where sealed brood was hatching) had quite a few bees with their heads in the cells. All you could see were the tips of their abdomens. Is this likely recently hatched bees cleaning out their cells?

Also, I noticed a section on the upper corner of one of my frames where the wax had been drawn out quite a bit more than the rest of the frame. It almost looked like a queen cell--but I don't think it was, it had cell-like areas where eggs could be laid.

if you smoked the bees befor you opened them up they were more than likely loading up with honey. The smoke makes them think that the house is about to burn down so they gorge themselves on honey thinking that they are about to have to move the hive and start all over. I have seen the depth of the comb vary in depth in the top corners of thr frames as this is typically where they store some honey.
