Title: Martin and Sherry's cut out 6-29-11
Post by: G3farms on June 30, 2011, 11:11:39 AM
Nice little cut out in the wall of a screened in porch. Swarm had moved in around fist of May. There was about 30+ pounds of honey and four deep frames of brood.

getting the last of them, notice the little white spot at the bottom center of the cut out, humming bird egg!!

I tried the extra shim with the screen in it to combine the vacuumed bees with the brood frames and let me tell you, if you make one be SURE that the slit for the screen to slide out of is small enough to NOT let the bees out. They were pissy to say the least. Took about four stings in short order when they boiled out of there and only got one in the palm of my hand while doing the cut out (grabbed my knife and there was a gal on the side of it and I squished her). All went very well, left the bees there and will pick them up tomorrow night.

Good job, got to love sit down removals.

That's a wise tip about not making the slot for the screen on cutout shim to wide, I also make a point to secure the shim to the boxes below with masking tap. Had the shim slide off to one side a little adding the brood boxes on a removal back in May with the result being 6 quick stings to the face, neck, and ears. Vacuumed bees are pissy!

Thanks for the photos.

Great pics.   So just how did that queen lay a humming bird egg?

Not sure but I bet she broke a bigger sweat than me  :-D

Actually this is the second cut out I have done that had humming bird eggs in it, the first was a couple of years ago in much of the same set up (screened in porch with board and batten siding on the outside where a knot had fallen out)

Nice cut out. I would be willing to bet the eggs you are seeing are gecko eggs.
