Title: Bees in Nashville
Post by: Algonam on July 04, 2011, 04:54:18 PM
Happy July 4th!

I am visiting Nashville (from Ottawa, Canada) and was suprised to see many honey bees on the blossoms right outside the hotel entrance. It seems so very industrial around here (compared to what I am used to)as we are close to the airport and just off I40. Someone must have a hive or 2 around. Any of you whom are on this board?
No need for bear electric fences around here!

Knoxville! We saw those signs...yesterday we went 4 hrs west along I40 to Memphis.
I really don't know how you handle this heat in a bee suit or even a veil!
This is currently hotter than any day of the year up where my bees are.

Now you can relate when you read about some of us working our bees in our T shirts !

Ps. If by the way you are a PANDA bear fan be sure and visit the Memphis Zoo !

I'm about 30 miles southeast of Nashville.  I remember a lot more bees when I was younger, and I don't remember it being this hot.  I spent years in North East Florida, and I'm acclimated to the heat...

Hope you enjoyed your visit to the musical city of Nashville. I live about 5 minutes east of the airport in Mt Juliet TN. I have a friend and mentor that has sixty or so hives within a stones throw of the Nashville airport. But I don't think he gets on this website. And speaking of the heat I can stand that better than I can that extreme cold ya'll have in Canada. 20 degrees is cold around here.
I have been to Canada twice on fishing trips and it is really pretty up there in the summer.

It's been nice talking to y'all from Tenn. Many blooming flowers around here.

Today we head home. It has been nice and a busy time. We do well in this heat for about 30 minutes at a time!
If you are 5 minutes east of the airport, maybe those were your bees I saw. We were staying on Donelson Pike, just a stone throw from the I40.

I'm anxious to check on my bees and re-charge the marine battery I have hooked up to the electric fence. I know the battery has run out and am just hoping a bear hasn't wondered through in the meantime!

Aw, you should've come on down here to south Alabama where it's *really* hot and humid.  PM me your address and I'll cut a slab of this humidity off and mail it to you.

If you're away from your hives very often you might want to look into a solar powered charger...they work pretty good...when the sun shines. ;)

Best wishes for a safe trip home!!

don't think bama has a monopoly on heat and humidity. 70 miles south of Nashville it gets pretty hot and humid here. darn Al Gore and his global warming.

And here I am stuck between bama and Tennessee sharing the weather of both.

I'll second that. plus the he77 fire thunder storms that add to the humidity.the heat indexes have not made it below 105 in over a month. I work on construction equipment on work sites. the added heat of the steel. has made me heat sick quite a few times. had to keep ice chests with wet rages to prevent heat stroke. were in Canada are you. I have family in three rivers.

Home now! I'll check on the bees tomorrow. They are a 40 minute drive from home on a rural lot.
FYI, for you heat freaks it is currently 68 degrees here at home.
At first we couldn't figure out how you live in that heat, but now that we're back in to our cooler temps, we are realising that we had started to become accustomed to it. We are a bit chilled!

AllenF.....if you mean Trois Rivieres in Quebec, that would be 6 hrs east of us, closer to where I grew up (in Montreal area)
(there may be a place called Three rivers in other parts of Canada)

Anyways it is fun to talk to you all while being in your neck of the woods!

The correct pronunciation is "ya'll".     :-D
