How is the heat. I went out in the bee yard yesterday and I have never un-enjoyed beekeeping more. I had planed on trying to play with maybe getting the bees to draw some queen cells on some frames for splits. I saw eggs and left and darn if I didn't have a shb attack on the nuc combine I did. So I just took the frames and washed them with the water hose and left them in a bucket out back. So for now on no bee work before 6 pm its just to darn hot.
I spent the rest of the day inside and even started my own war with the sun coating my windows in aluminum foil I know it looks bad but darn it that stuff keeps the sun out. That with the fact that my air conditioner didn't turn off all day yesterday I have to do something to just keep it cool in the house.
How the heat hitting yall and don't chime in if you live in what I would call a cool area yesterday here it was 99 with air you had to chew to suck in. This post if for Schawee, JP and all the rest of us living on the edge of hells rim lol.
All joking aside be safe its to darn hot right now.
Any tricks on staying cool will be appreciated I am thinking of soaking the suit down in ice water from now on.
come to oregon. i am considering turning on the heat today. will probably do it sometime this week. nothing grows. the honey yield will probably not be good as rain is coming right in the middle of the blackberry bloom.
We were 92F here in Michigan yesterday, but having lived in Memphis, I know what you mean by HOT. I couldn't take the heat anymore and moved north.
If aluminum foil is helping to keep your house cool, I wonder what it might do on a bee hive?
Oh, by the way, we're 72F right now :-D

I get up early and work the hives. It' s cooler at 6AM than it is at 6PM. :-D
And if the heat is seriously ruining your beekeeping fun, get an ultrabreeze suit. They really are a lot cooler.
Heat index of 100 today. So much for me making splits this afternoon after work or hoeing under some weeds in the garden. May have to just mow the weeds between the rows soon.
Predicted high today 93 tomorrow 102!
It was a nice balmy 97° F in the shade yesterday. I don't know why the heat is so much more "hot" here. Still it's nice. The hives are in full sun, with judicious ventilation they are working well. Two of them are sitting over bare concrete, and I see the occasional bee in the water source. My only problem is SHB.
NWMO it's 88 with 75% humidity and 115 heat index. Yuck
Sissies. :-D
They just put on a heat advisory for here tomorrow. High 98, heat index 105. I went out this afternoon and the heat was like a weight pressing down.
But I prefer the muggy heat lately, because at least we are getting thunderstorms every few days. Before this latest wave, it was mid-eighties and dry as a bone for weeks.
I'm hoping to begin beekeeping spring of 2012. I'm glad I didn't start this year. We've only had 5.5 inches of rain from Nov 1 thru July 11th and we've had almost 30 consecutive days of 100F+ temps..with max of 109.2 on July 9th..no end in sight...we need your prayers

RC, I lived between Orlando, Ocala, and Jacksonville for 30 years. I know how hot it gets, and I'm TELLING you it's HOTTER here in TN.
it was 99 when i did the cutout friday and 98 today when i did another cutout but both cutouts heat index was 105 and the humidity was 90 now thats hotttttt  my vented jacket did help but i needed some breeze that never happened .....schawee
Right now I'm sick to my stomach. Then, Schawee, you talk about wearing a bunch of clothes. I'm starting to get dizzy.
I've been out there wearing a pair of shorts and a smile...
cap ,if you were with me friday you wouldn't have been smiling with them short pants :-D
We were in the 100's last week, but it finally cooled off this week to the high 80's. We often get days on end of 105-107. I stay inside and try not to go outside much. We do not have air conditioning, but have a swamp cooler. It works ok as long as the humidity is very low. On high temperature days, it can be very hot inside the house.

Just funnin', it is really hot in Tn in the summer, been there, done that. Actually, a lot of the country has been hotter that Fl this year. We've had a fairly mild summer with avg temps in the low 90s. We had about a week of 100° temps in June but since then it's been a little more tolerable. I really feel sorry for the folks up north that aren't used to the heat. I bet it's rough on them.
I know what you mean by the heat. We have been breaking records here. We have had a few days that topped 110. The other day the news said it was 111, but 3 different people plus us had thermometers in the shade that read 115-118!!! It's crazy.
I only work the hives if I get out there around 730. Light enough to see eggs and 80 is warm in a suit, but not unbearable.
Stay cool, all.

rain and 56. turned on the heat this AM. seems like we could share a bit of that heat with you all?? what do you need in trade?
That is very cool temps Kathy - what is up with that?? Not usual for you this time of year?
it is. our highs have been running at least 10 degrees below our average for this time of the year. last year was bad also, but this is worse. gardens are not doing anything (weeds are good), and to have rain now may ruin or at least decrease the honey take for the year.
on the + side, with the very heavy snow pack and snow late into the year, there is no water shortage and the ski resorts have been open longer than most remember. the constant gloom is a little depressing.....
i guess we'll be eating mexican tomatoes again this year :'(
Right now at 9:37 AM its 85 degrees 74% humidity with a real feel of 106 It list calm for the wind right now so none at all
At 3 pm today it should be 99 with the feel like of 118 oh this one is brisk 5 mph breeze I will believe that when I see it
At 11 pm tonight should be back down to 81 with 86% humidity and feel like of 90 and 2 mph breeze if you in the open
and at 6 am tomorrow it will be a cool 76 degrees with wait for it 92% humidity and a brisk 1 mph breeze you should be able to see the water in the air and a real feel of 83 which is cool for right now but I bet you could still ring out a shirt in 10 minutes
that is from accuweather
Oh and I don't live near any body of water so no breezes unless there is a storm coming
I wanted to let you know its like this every year oh and the forecast just went up to 100 for today :)
If the last long, nasty winter wasnt still prevalent in my mind, Id be complaining up a storm.
So I will only state the facts:
Its been putrid hot here.
During my last hive inspection I could hardly see through the sweat dripping into my eyes.
Good thing the veil protects me from the 2 pound mosquitos.
Haddon, if I had to live in Mississippi valley again, I would rip out that cotton insulation and super insulate everything with 6 to 10 inches of foam. At that point a few tons of AC MIGHT start making a dent in the heat!
It is a tough climate there; extreme heat in the summer, and much colder than Florida in the winter.
All I know is in January I was praying for warm weather, now that I have it, I don't guess I should complain. ;)
Hit 103 today. humidity 97%. sweated 10 gals. of water at work. category 5+ heat advisory. Got home took shower. temp inside 72. fell asleep talking to wife. :thunder: got hit by the paper. decided not to check the hives till tommorrow. suppose to cool down to the mid 90's. thank god for the cooler weather.
Yessir RC! I know you are.
Crazy thing is I'm not. 2 years here and I can go out in July/August at 8 o'clock in the morning and be covered in sweat in 15 minutes. It's making me scratch my... uh... Head!
Schawee, I will take your word for it!
