Title: Oops, I made a mistake now I have a mad wife and dead bees
Post by: uglyfrozenfish on July 14, 2011, 11:22:31 PM
Ok, I took a frame of capped honey off of a hive about 20 miles from my house and was debating on harvesting it for myself or giving it to my newer bees which are at my house.  After a couple of days storing it in the breeseway(sp?) I noticed ants getting to it.  I was going to save it for the bees in the fall or spring but didn't know how to store it yet.  I moved the frame to the garage, then left the door open. My wife was none to thrilled with me baiting hundreds of honey bees into our garage   I put the frame outside the garage that night and the next morning sprayed the area in  the garage with bee quick to discourage them from hanging around.  NOW I have a hundred or so honey bees lying on the garage floor dead!!  Did I use too much bee quick could something else have happened??  I am at a loss, and bummed that my girls had to go that way.

Thanks for your insight,
Lee

Best way to store a frame of honey is in the freezer, will kill any SHB and wax moth.

Bees in the garage probably died from stress.

Ha ha, reminds me of the time I tried to extract honey in the driveway!!

100 bees...no problem.  They'll fly around the area for days afterward trying to find that honey.  Give her time, she'll get to the point where that won't bother her.

best way to get them out of the garage is to just crack the door and shut the lights out.  Last year during honey extraction I left the honey house for lunch and when I returned 1/2 hour later the man door hadn't shut and blow open.  I had millions of bee's in there.  You couldn't breath.   I just shut the door for the day.  About a 1/2 hour before sunset I went back and opened the garage door until after dark.  Most went house for the night.   I then hung my big bug zapper for the night with a garbage bucket under it to take out the yellow jackets

When I do something dumb, my wife's favorite saying is: "I'm thinking LOBSTER tonight." To which I respond "yes dear"  :lau: :lau: :lau:

If there is a shortage of lobster this year, it might be my fault.  :buttkick:

Without my errors, my wife would be eating hot dogs. -Mike

Here is what works for me, and it is important to repeat all 5 items IN ORDER:

(don't worry--you'll learn)

1.  I'm sorry.
2.  It was all my fault.
3.  It'll never happen again.
4.  You need some new shoes.
5.  Let's go shopping.

Lather, rinse, repeat.
