I have my hive in our back yard. Could i locate a swarm trap about 50 ft from it ?? I just dont want my bees to be adversly affected from it. If it's too close what would you say is the minimum distance from the hive ?
I've had them 50 feet away and up to 300 yards away. I've had them ignore them as well as move right in on both counts. The location won't adversly affect your hive either way.
Ok so then how many frames would you recommend that I put in there ?? I was thinking about 2 per nuc box. I've baited them with lemon grass. Thought what's the harm in trying. I probably Wont get any anyways. More boxes for the spring then.
I have traps all the way from the barn to my back porch and I only trapped one swarm in a trap on my back porch, closest trap to the hives. maybe 50 to 100 foot from the hives.
I have 6 nucs made. 2 i forgot to compensate for the size and there isnt any room under the deep frames when there in there so im gonna use Bars like a top bar hive. Then cut off the comb and band it on a deep frame.
Any who im scattering them around town. 1 home, 1 out in a field 3 miles away, 1 at my dads in town. ( beeks around him.) 1 in a park in town, 1 out in the county and 1 more in a differnt park in town or my sisinlaw thta lives near the park.
Not shure why im posting this. Guess im just looking for some input.
If you're going to put in frames, put all of them in. So you don't have wild comb in it after they move in. A quarter mile is perfect. 100 yards isn't bad. Next door works sometimes.
I thought having all the frames would make the space look "Smaller" But if they wont care then ill do that.
Put foundationless frames in. If it's a wedge top bar turn the wedge edgeways. If ti's a grooved top bar glue some wide craft sticks (dilly bar "size popscicle sticks) or a paint stick in the groove. This will give them the space you're looking for while giving them a frame to build on so you don't have to do a cut out.
