Title: Pulling honey today
Post by: beegrlAK on July 23, 2011, 01:07:17 PM
We've had two weeks of good weather, yesterday was 70, woke up to bad weather moving in that will probably last all week so I'm pulling my honey.  Last year I got a tablespoon so I'm not going to lose it this year!  I have 4 hives this year and the bees are expensive so I'd like to have a little honey for a change!

I couldnt imagine being a beekeep in Alaska. I think my flows in Tn are too short as it is.

I, too, am impressed that you keep bees in Alaska.  I spent a summer on the Kenai Peninsula decades ago and the temp actually reached 95 degrees when I was there, but also know the first snow came August 7th!

It is always hard when you have a year where you don't get anything.  Puts the pressure on you the following year to make sure you get some kind of harvest (been there, done that).  Hope you get a big haul this year -- between 4 hives you should be able to cobble together at least a super full of honey frames!  Good luck.

If you end up with some honey that you'd like to sell please let me know! My daughter lives on base in Anchorage and I've been trying to find her a local beekeeper for a while now!
