Title: Feeding dry sugar got me to thinking.....
Post by: njoylife10 on August 12, 2011, 06:34:04 PM
Why not use powdered sugar to feed in the winter.  I would think it would be easier for them to break down and carry back to the cluster.  I know it would be more expensive, but on a small scale, it wouldn't be too bad.  Are there any other reasons why this would be a bad idea?

Almost all the store bought powdered sugar has corn starch in it.   It would not be a pretty site if you fed them that in the winter.

besides, you know what it does when it gets damp. you'd have a sticky mess dripping all over the place.

Powdered sugar as feed is very injurious to bees because of the starch.  Do not feed them powdered sugar.

Well now see......that's what I get for thinking :)

I knew you guys would have the answer.  I didn't know that about the cornstarch.

Thanks all,
