Title: Honey in Mason jars? Is this OK?
Post by: Algonam on August 27, 2011, 09:14:52 AM
We aren't selling our honey so I am wondering if it is ok to store our own honey in Mason jars. .....or is there a certain reason why a standard honey jar is used. Around here mason jars don't cost as much.

Mason jars are more common than you think. Most beeks can run to the Piggly Wiggly and buy a case so they are easily accessible as well. Go for it!

I would bet at tailgate, farmers markets, etc. that, as you have surely seen, more honey is sold in pint & quart glass canning jars than anything else !

Absolutely. I store my honey in plastic buckets, and give it away in mason jars!

Alot of folks prefer the Mason jar--- the biggest draw back is the two piece lid. But I can live with that.

People understand pints and quart jars but are lost when you talk about pound and two pound jars. (unit of measure for honey)

Mason jars sells the same as a syrup jar.   And with the lid, just buy the one piece lid.   White lid looks better to me.

I prefer the standard canning jars as well.  I like the small mouth (I think it is easier to pour out of), and I just use the lids that come with them.  Plus the people who buy them can always reuse them for canning.  I'll give a discount if they return the jar, but nobody ever does.

They're a lot easier to find than having to have something shipped.

It depends on your market.  A lot of people see honey in a mason jar and think of homemade and home grown.   More "sophisticated" people may see it is cheap, but they probably aren't the customers who are going to pay a premium for real fresh honey anyway...

I would be more apt to buy honey in a mason jar than a plastic jar.
Before I had bees I bought my honey from a co-op where you get to fill your container from a big stainless steel container with a spout. Very down-home. I like that.

And throw away the lid that came with the jar --- never seen them sold with solid lids. Of course second use and return jars are a different situation.

The hardware store near me sells these white tops that fit the mason jars. I also like them better than the ring and lids which can be messy when taking on and off.
