Title: cutout in barataria la at a duck camp - part1
Post by: schawee on September 12, 2011, 10:28:42 PM
i got a call from a lady about getting some bees out of thier duck camp.they were intrested in becoming beekeepers and wanted the bees .so we set up a date (which was 2 weeks) ago and got the bees out.the first hive was huge with about 45000 bees and they were very gentle bees .i got maybe 5 stings out of both hives.the cutout went great with 10 frames of brood.i was always looking for the queen and at the end i didn't have her.we took a break to get something to eat and let the bees gather backup and try to find her again.this camp was built in the 1930's and had nucks where she could go.i left a piece of brood comb to get them to go to it.on returning they had 3 groups of bees .one group was outside at the entrence the other was on the brood comb and a third was on the floor.i went to the floor first and she was there.some how she flew down without us seeing her and was stepped on.what a sad sight to see her there dead.i put her in the queen catcher and put it inthe box and got the rest of the bees to go in.they had alot of eggs for them to make a new queen .they had made 8 queen cells.the second hive will be in part 2 .hope yall enjoy it cause it was great doing this cutout and meeting these great people that will become great beekeepers.     cutout at duck camp part 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-V1-MxHFEE#)     ........schawee

If they were really bad a@@ bees, they would have moved in before Katrina. Better watch it they just might be free loaders.  :-D

That was really nice how you helped those up and coming beekeepers Schwee. You made it all look so easy in your usual relaxed fashion. I never saw you hold the frames up against the combs like that to measure the size,  and it is something to remember.

Thanks for sharing

Shawee, you do some good videos that include installing comb into frames.  Ever thought of doing a cutout with the specific intent of showing detailed close-ups of trimming, placing in frames, maybe pressing comb edges onto frame edges, etc.,?  I like the way you measure out the comb for a close fit in the frames.  Nice work.

I am curious about something (actually about a lot of things, but...).  Sometimes I see you, JP, and others  place a piece of comb in a frame that only maybe fills half the frame but you don't add anymore comb to the frame.  Other times I see several pieces of comb get placed in a frame.  Any rhyme or reason to this or is it one of those "that's the way I did it that time" things?

Great job, Shawee!!!  And looks like some new beeks getting a great education!!!!!!
