Title: Pollen Alert
Post by: Haddon on September 14, 2011, 03:27:42 PM
I was checking the weather and saw a alert its a pollen alert.

Question I would think this would mean that flowers are in bloom does anyone have more info than that.
Can we as beekeepers us the pollen alerts to know how well the bees might be doing or if there is a bloom on??

Side note I knew yesterday it would be a high day the pollen was coming into the hives in droves.

Don't know about down your way but wild sunflowers and rag weed are producing a lot of pollen up here in VA.

I am in the red on Pollen.com

The question is can you use something like pollen.com to make a assessment of pollen available for your bees.

To tell what is blooming maybe but how much pollen is actually in the air would depend on the weather.

Weather service pollen alerts are usually only for species that cause human allergies.  The most likely right now is ragweed.  Luckily, in many areas ragweed and goldenrod bloom at about the same time.
