Title: Hi from SF Bay Area
Post by: nonna italiana on July 18, 2005, 12:55:20 AM
Hello to all.  I'm new to beekeeping.  A friend gave a swarm to me back in May; now I have a backyard hive in the East Bay.  I've learned a lot from everyone who has been posting to this board.  Thanks to everyone, you've all been very helpful.  Lots of neat pix, too!

Thanks for the nice welcome.  Seems the swarm I've hived has a mix of light & dark bees.  They seem to be pretty gentle, as clumsy as I still am with checking the hive, I haven't bothered too much with all the protective gear.
I've got 2 brood chambers, then 3 medium supers now above the queen excluder.  Using 10 frames with pierco foundation.  Got loads of nectar, but not much of it is capped honey.  My hive is under a tree, so maybe it needs more warmth or ventilation?
Having a great time with my bees -- it's really neat to come home, sit outside & watch them for awhile.
I'm going to have lots of questions when it comes time to extract honey...
