Title: Question about Bee Brands
Post by: Hayudog on October 21, 2011, 12:40:55 PM
My father and grandfather were commercial beekeepers in California.  I still have their old brand that we used on equipment, frames and boxes.  Does anyone know who I contact in California to see if the brand is still active or still registered in their name? Grandfather started in the '40's, and I'm not sure when they registered with the state.  I do remember Dad would get calls from bee inspectors in regards to AFB hives, and or move permits,  so they had to track him down by the brand.  Thanks in advance.  Doug

I would contact this organization http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/Livestock_ID/Brand_Registration_Info.html (http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/ahfss/Livestock_ID/Brand_Registration_Info.html)
and if that is not the right place they might be able to point you in the right direction

call Ag in Sacramento 916-654-0768 try asking for for MARY FRANCO-or LARY G BEZARK he is branch chief
your number is still good--tell them you need a copy of the brand certificate-cost is $25

these brands are through the integrated pest control branch
plant health and pest prevention services

Thanks for the replies.  Lary Bezark has retired, and they said that Mary is someplace else now.  Talked to Chung Lui at the State Ag who handles apiary brands now. Said it may take a while, but he'll dig through and see if he can come up with any information.  I'll update if he gets any hits.  Doug

goes to show you how depleted the system is in california-the brand will help as a theft
deterrent but try and find out contact info from a brand number and they all got there heads in the sand--RDY-B

As an update.... nothing yet. As the wheels turn slowly in government.  I'll give it another week and then call them back.
