Oh, and there is a hole to blow smoke into, "in case the hive must be opened for inspections".   Somebody is going to get an apartment full of bees.   :-D

The string must be attached to a big vice that squeezes the comb until honey comes out.  Don't worry.  I'm sure the bees will be just fine.

I can't tell if it's just a joke.  If you go the the Phillips (http://www.design.philips.com/philips/sites/philipsdesign/about/design/designportfolio/design_futures/design_probes/projects/microbial_home/urban_beehive.page) site, they have more "ideas," including a toilet that filters the water through a few trays of grass to remove the effluent while moving the solids to a methane digester.

Hilarious.

Better are the comments posted.

"If colony collapse remains unsolved, bees will ultimately abandon the hive – which has to be destroyed before new bees will return."

Can you remove the combs? Here in MA. you must be able to remove the frames of comb for inspection, i dunno about all the other states.

Pull a string?   Like a tampon maybe?   I don't think it would ever come to market.   They just made it for the advertisement they get through the news.   On really sunny days, all the wax would melt.  Are the frames removable?   And what do you do when all the glass is covered with bee glue?

Didn't you read the article? ;)  Quote: "It also comes equipped with a hole to blow smoke into — the traditional way of calming bees — in case the hive needs to be opened from the inside to be inspected."   Simple!   :pop:

:-D

I'd like to ignore what would be coming out with that honey, but since I can't, it just gets grosser and funnier...
