Title: 9 frame hives
Post by: ranger774 on December 23, 2011, 10:46:05 AM
I see a lot on 8 frame and 10 frame hives, but not on 9 frames, which is what I use.  What are some of the advantages or disadvantages of 9 frame hives?

If it is a true 9 frame, (not a 9 frame in a 10 frame brood box) it will be 10% lighter than a 10 frame.   That is about the only difference that would matter to me.

I put 9 frames in an eight frame box.  Some put 9 frames in a ten frame box... which one are you?

I do 9 frames in a 10 frame box.

About the same weight then because of the thicker frames as the 10 frame box.   Only use already drawn frames before putting 9 frames in a 10 frame box or you will end up with a lot of crazy comb between the frames.   9 frame super boxes are easier to extract honey for me.   Thicker frames are easy to uncap and you only have to spin less frames.   I know they sell the frame separators for 8 frames in a 10 frame box, but I do not know of anyone that uses them.

I went to the web sites Michael Bush posted, and got answers for my questions.  Thanks.
