Title: Clovers in December
Post by: gov1623 on December 23, 2011, 11:47:41 PM
Its been real warm down south lately without any freezes yet. I been noticing more and more clovers blooming in my area. Today i took a walk in my back yard and it was practically white with all the clover blooms. All the yards around my house are the same way. The bees are all over in them too. Would it be possible to get a small flow to put some more weight on my hives. If we don't get a freeze soon.

If they manage to make a living and bring in some fresh pollen you are definately winning.  My bees haven't seen a flower since October and won't be able to make a living till the dandelions bloom in April.  Merry Christmas

I saw cherries blooming at an office building in Norcross this week with this warm weather.

This morning I saw some henbit starting to bloom.  Narcissus blooming (not sure of honey bee attraction).  White camellias have been blooming (bees have been bringing in pollen from it...not sure of nectar) with red ones getting ready to bust out.

Same here. I live in Franklin, Louisiana and my pear tree started blooming a month ago. My citrus have begun sprouting new leaves. My guava tree is flowering, and what I call "coc-a-bur" clover started blooming two weeks ago. The coc-a-bur clover is a clover that make small yellow flowers and in turn make small coc-a-burs after the flowers die. It usually does not start blooming until late January or early February. Seems the plants don'f know what time of the year it is now. My bees are enjoying the early flowers though. My angel trumpet is also blooming and my bees love the long trumpet flowers. Confusing weather though.

I don't know what is blooming here in Southeast PA, but in the last week on days when the sun came out I have seen bees coming in with pollen.  Last week it was almost white, Monday it was orange.  There was an ornamental cherry with a few odd blooms on it about a month ago at a local bank(could be all the hot air coming off those bank executives :))

Some weather...Floods in Sept...Snow for Halloween....now 40's and 50's in Dec.   Everyday is one day closer to SPRING...I'm ready!!!

I don't look to see any clover for a while yet, but I noticed buds on my lilacs yesterday and watched as my bees were open feeding. And, it looks like they will be able to fly pretty much all week.

Pretty amazing for a South Dakota winter.

One of our senior beekeepers in the club brought in 2 branches of 2 different types of maple that were in full bloom to our December meeting. My bees are building in numbers and bringing in white, light and dark yellow, and dark orange pollen.
We are going into the 30's tonight. Hopefully the high 30's.

Wild turnips(?), a leafy, yellow flowered plant is blooming (has been for a week or so).  Noticed on the way in to town that the red camellias are starting to pop out...will have to check mine in the morning.
