If you have any ideas on the best all-around books on bee keeping, [either new or old} how about posting it here for all to see?
I've got an 'old' 1910-12 copy of ABC-XYZ that is fascinating (I love the way those guys talked back then), but my current favorite is Michael Bush's 'Practical Beekeeping.'

Two of my favorites are
The Practical Beekeeper, by of course Michael Bush
and
The complete idiot's guide to beekeeping.
I have the ABC and XYZ of Bee Culture by A.I. and E. R. Root, 1913 Edition. Priceless in my opinion.

I've been wanting to buy a copy but I heard someone mention that a new version was coming out "soon". Of course, who knows when "soon" is. :)

The ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture 41st ed.
The Back Yard Beekeeper.
Beekeeping For Dummies
Read all 3 cover to cover. Looks like the next book I will get will be The Practical Beekeeper by Michael Bush.
I am also looking for a good book on bee biology. Any suggestions?
Jim
abc & xyz was my first book I would say my favorite straight forward book though is Keeping Bees by John Vivian
Honeybee Democracy by Thomas D. Seeley
A very interesting book -- easy to read and understand.
Seeley is a biologist and beekeeper and this book gives great explanations of bee society, swarming and other aspects of their democratic lives!!! I read it once....took it back to the library.... checked it out a few weeks later....took it back...and then ended up buying my own copy.
I'd agree that Seeley's book is a GREAT read, very entertaining and thought provoking, but I would not say it's the best all-around book on beekeeping. He covers a number of topics ranging from the "superorganizm" to swarm mentality. But most of the topics are from a research perspective, and not from a practical use perspective. You can use what he says in one way shape or form, but you can't manage a hive in any respects after reading his book.
'Beekeeping for dummies' is my go to book.
