Title: Amish German Blacks
Post by: dupa240 on January 13, 2012, 12:43:53 AM
I purchased  2 nucs from a friend of mine who lives in Amish country and one of the had a black queen.  I wanted her cause her laying pattern was superb.  By the end of the summer the hive was half black with all black drones.  The hive is really hot.  I keep my hives in the middle of a large garden and I was always getting stung by them while I was minding my own business and away from them.  I finally moved them out of the garden to the side by themselves.  When I walk by them sometimes I get it & sometimes I don't.  A veil & gloves have to be used when working them.  When you take the top covers off they are ready to fight regardless of amount of smoke.  I think  the queen is the result of some Amish hive's drones.  They draw comb & pack the honey away like crazy so I kept them.  I guess they are a hybrid from the old German Blacks.

When I lived in OK. back in 1980, I cut a beetree that had little black bees in it. They burned me up getting them, but made a great crop that summer.
I always put out a white flag when coming into the beeyard! :-D

I have had nice little 3 banded golden bees turn hot also.   I don't think color goes with temperament.

Yep! Shine never seemed the same after that.  ;) What a shame.

I dated Acey's cousin awhile back. Not saying much since everyone else did too!

But the good news is after the bad break up, they still are cordial to each other at the family reunions, funerals and such.

You should always wear a veil anyhow. You should never place a colony where you may be working close by.
If at all possible fifty yards or more from where there may be activity, if you have an aggressive bees. I am not talking Africanized here when I say aggressive. Always make sure you are in a good mood when areoud them. I seems they can detect foul moods. We produce  certain hormone odors when we are in a foul mood. Or wasn't you aware of that. :)don2

I just don't have a place in my heart for mean bees.    People come over all summer long to pick blueberries and veggies.   I can't take that risk.   Also, my 5 year old knows no boundaries.   But that is my fault because he has been raised next to hives all his life.   We play and cook on the back porch next to a hive and am luck that these guys have stayed gentle ever since that swarm landed there years ago.

I wonder if they observed Martin Luther King Day today? Or since they are Amish German are they more likely to observe Octoberfest?  Is their honey superior for making mead?

i don't think that works, i've been stung twice while walking away from my hives after standing there for a few minutes or more.
