I went on the website to order a bee movie (I'll withhold the name since I refuse to market their movie for free. :roll: )
To show it at a bee association meeting, it requires a license requirement, and costs 125.00
It seems the trend that movies makers are more inclined to promote "Viewings" than just sell the movie to consumers.
So I'm asking if you know of any movies out there that would be good for public education yet not require formal paperwork and not so costly.
Anything on PBS, NOVA or other, that you know about?

Is this a State Ordnance? Or a requirement of the filmmaker? Is your Association a nonprofit? It may make a difference, it does in many States. Will the Association be collecting anything from the potential viewers? If necessary you could split the cost between attendees.
You could also just call your association 'something else' for an afternoon and just show the movie that 'you already paid for' to 'some friends' who dropped by ;) In any case the 'charge' seems excessive.

If you or any club members have Netflix, it's availabe from them.
i am no movie maker but i think that $125-175 is a standard going rate (i also looked into a bee movie for an event). There are slightly different rates if you show for money or not, for institutions or non-profits, all depend on distributor. i think it is a fair price that retributes the work done, not a huge money maker for the film maker.
T Beek's suggestion seems to me a little like someone going around and 'borrowing' other's beehives... permanently. :'(
if you have 30 viewers @ $5, you pay for the rental. If the organization pitches in, it subsidized a entrance fee reduction on each member. If you have done your work well, you can make some money.
Let's be fair and support the artist.

I can't post the link but it's an easy find when you search the title on the PBS website.
I organized a screening of probably the same movie mentioned in the original post (it was a bit more when I got it for a small public screening).
I sold honey at the event (mine and another beeks) with all proceeds going to defray cost of license.
We even sold the honey pretty cheap ($5 a pound or less because I think the other guy had his in pint jars, cheap in my book). I have a little backyard/urban beekeeping talk and introduced the movie (10 minutes).
Not only did we cover the cost of the license but had some money left over that we gave to the sustainability group that I did the screening through.
I may try to do another screening through our local club and our local theater (if I can talk the small theater into doing it on the cheap). But, that license might cost more (I have the DVD already, but would honor the license agreement of the movie people).
I think it is not an exorbitant price. The filmmakers have done quite a bit of advocacy work and the doing an important job at spreading the word about the bee predicament. They have to make a living like the rest of us and I appreciate in particular their choice of topics to do a film on :)
