Title: Mold after Freezing
Post by: mikecva on February 18, 2012, 12:26:51 PM
My daughter froze some frames in bags in early winter, then removed them without removing the bags. Now there is some mold on them. Any idea what kind of mold it is and how to remove it? Is it OK to let the bees have the frames this spring or do I need to do something first or what?  The mold is white and has no  smell.   Thanks   -Mike

My experience has been that the bees will clean it up without any problem. Others may see a different solution to it.

If the honey is capped, you could probably wipe off the mold with a rag soaked in vinegar and gently drag the soaking wet cloth over the surface.  That would kill the mold and clean it I would think.  It would not harm the bees either.  The honey will not harm the bees either and I don't think I would sell it but I would eat it myself.  It is probably not harmed unless we are talking long time fur carpet of mold.

I let the bees clean it up, but always give your supers a day to warm up and dry off after they come out of the freezer.

Never eat any mold, anytime, no matter what it was on. It cold be your last meal.

There is one in every crowd. You all know what I was trying to say.
