Title: Honey Molasses ?
Post by: qabloona on February 18, 2012, 08:08:50 PM
Spending the winter in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Beats the heck outta Ottawa Canada for winter golf. Stopped at a farmers' market and there was a booth selling local honeys as well as a dark product identified as honeylasses. Looked very much like buckwheat but when I tasted it there was a distinct molasses taste. I asked the vendor for details and he said he was not a beekeeper but sold for a co-op of 25 beekeepers. He said the honeylasses was cold pressed comb. I didn't know what he was talking about and think he was just selling a honey molasses mix. Not complaining, I liked it but would appreciate knowing a little more about this product.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was cold pressed with dark Karo instead of honey.

I've had that stuff, and like all the sugar free stuff I've eaten lately, it doesn't taste anything like honey, but if you keep eating it, it tastes pretty good.

The texture is like honey, but my first impression was "perfumed apple..."

I actually came by the same looking and tasting honey from a guy I know personally that was a cut out from his house about two years ago. Had a molasses type taste and did not crystalize after two years and all he did was squeeze out cone thru fine kitchen filter. He has had bees in his house five times and never properly repaired it until we fixed it for him couple months back. We got a gallon honey from him and is the best honey I ever tasted.( Not the molasses type) Set up a swarm box and caught a small swarm this week there and will be my first try at beekeeping. Tired of buying the stuff I love in my coffee. :-D

that sounds good.  not only do i think i'd like the taste, but molasses has some benefit also.  my great grandmother used to take a tablespoon of dark molasses every night "for her blood".  wasn't until years later i found out that molasses had iron in it. i thought she just had a sweet tooth!
