I'll be starting two hives this spring from 2 4-frame nucs (Italians) and am curious about the different supers I should go with in establishing both hives.
Obviously I'll be starting with a standard (deep) brood box to accomodate the nuc frames but once the other frames in the hive have been filled or are close to capacity, should I add another deep or should I add a medium?
I've seen both methods used so I'm curious as to the differences.
I'm in Eastern Ontario just south of Ottawa.

Most folks as far north as you winter in two deep boxes so I think adding on another deep is your safest bet. Wintering in a single deep where you are at, is possible, but only for the very experienced I would venture. Have fun with your first bees! And best of luck sir.
i run 2deeps ,deep and medium,and just mediums,but i would say that you will be better off going with two deep brood because of how far north you are. ......schawee
Keep it simple. Deeps for brood boxes.
I use all mediums and wouldn't have it any other way, besides maybe all shallows ;)
Box size matters little if you remember that the bottoms are reserved for broodnest. What's the equation? 3 mediums equal two deeps. For many in my age group it all depends on the amount of hefting one does :-D

some out in Minnesota are running three deeps going into winter filled with honey and bees and usually dont have to feed the hive and come out of winter with strong hives as long as your mite count is down. I run two deeps and a medium of honey for my brood chambers and dont forget mid summer is the best time to make sure your mite count is low that way your winter bees are healthy going into fall. Chris
