Title: What to do W/ hives if Pesticides Sprayed Aerial / Ground?
Post by: Apis_M_Rescue on April 06, 2012, 05:19:07 AM
I have a number of rescued hives that are in southern California at organic citrus groves. I remember back in the days when malathion was sprayed for the various medflys before I had my ladies, & many beneficials in garden were erradicated. Now w/ discovery of the Asian Psyllid in Hacienda Heights been worryin bout the possible chemical action the CDFA might take to mitigate this lethal citrus pest. All of our hives here in parts of San Gabriel Valley & neighboring might be effected so to be proactive we need to be prepared.

Riverside had issues last year & listed was ground sprayin: http://www.pe.com/local-news/riverside-county/riverside/riverside-headlines-index/20111111-riverside-discovery-of-citrus-pest-prompts-spraying.ece (http://www.pe.com/local-news/riverside-county/riverside/riverside-headlines-index/20111111-riverside-discovery-of-citrus-pest-prompts-spraying.ece)

They list ground spraying w/ leaves sprayed w/Tempo ( http://www.pestproductsonline.com/products/Tempo_SC_Ultra-35-0.html (http://www.pestproductsonline.com/products/Tempo_SC_Ultra-35-0.html) ) & bees are listed under target pests :( .

The other sprayed on ground is a dreaded nicotine synthetic - Merit Insecticide = imidacloprid ( by surprise Bayer, crap! http://www.livingwithbugs.com/merit_insecticide.html (http://www.livingwithbugs.com/merit_insecticide.html) )

I'm organic & keep in organic groves so had no worries until now. Have any beekeeps from the old malathion medfly aerial sprayin days been able to have a good survival rate w/ their hives? What measures did you take?
