i took a lathe one time and but some triangle bits in it that you could run a sheet of mdf through.  it would cut the proper angles so the sheet of wood folded into a octagon shaped speaker box.  then you hit it with the glue and nailgun.  I dont like the finger joints personally.  I like the box joints.  sliding miter saw with 14" cut and a router table is the only way to fly..  wish I could get my hands on some of that cypress dimensional lumber though..

I'm pretty sure I saw that machine for sale on another forum in the $10k range. I do remember thinking that I wouldnt live long enough to make enough boxes to pay for it. :-P

That machine is designed to run 8 hours a day minimum 365 days a year.     Sweet machine though.  Hard to explain that kind of money to the wife.

why is the box ( finger ) joint prefered over say dovetailed corners? if you have a router you can find a decent dovetail jig for under $100.00. a dovetail would actually make a stonger box.

For me it is a time issue......

Yeah, but the first could be considered a prototype or test model. You would need to test it, perhaps someone to use it and market it that it's been field tested, etc.

Let me know when I can get the first "test" model for free.  :-D

After trying to figure out an easy way for a "wood dummy" to make finger or dove joints with a table saw I threw in the towel.  I use butt joints with Titebond 3 and 2 to 2 1/2" deck screws for all the deeps and supers I make for myself.  Not sure how they'll fare 15 years from now but at this point they've held up as well as the supplier bought finger joint boxes.

Mr. Coates, after seeing your nuc box design I would say your are far from a "wood dummy".  Pretty crafty one if you ask me.

Box joints are time consuming and tedious but that's what most people use.  Here are the instructions from beesource if you want ot take the time to make them.

http://www.beesource.com/files/boxjoint.pdf (http://www.beesource.com/files/boxjoint.pdf)

I've made many with butt joints and 3" deck screws.  On the deeps I think I used 7 screws per joint with gorilla glue.  They've lasted 3 years and are still going strong.  No problems.  I cut down my old 10 frame supers to 8 frame and put a butt joint on those with 5 3" deck screws and gorilla glue.  So far no probs.
