Title: New package installation update.....
Post by: archer5x on April 15, 2012, 06:48:25 PM
We are newbies and installed 2 packages on 04-12-12 late afternoon, deep brood bodies with wired foundation in the frames, i gallon quail feeders with sugar syrup inside another empty super on top.   Happy to say everything went easier than we imagined and were quite proud of ourselves.  Checked them today at 1600 hrs.  Bright sunny weather in the 70's and found the first hive the queen was released and two frames drawn about 3/4 full and two others 1/2 drawn (both sides),feeder was empty so we refilled. a few cells had some different colors of something inside them (red, yellow) maybe pollen?  Hive two, queen is still in her cage with the majority of the candy gone, decided the workers would probably release her by tomorrow or so and decided to leave er alone, didn't want to take a chance of her flying away.  Two frames 3/4 on both sides and two frames 1/2 on both sides, feeder empty so refilled.  We thought things looked good and are happy with everything so far.  I know this doesn't mean much to alot of you but we are new so we are estatic that things are going great so we are getting more comfortable everyday.  Any comments would be appreciated good or bad.....

I just installed bees in two hives for the first time ever today. I hope when I check them in 4-5 days they look as good as yours. I'm too new to say but it sounds like yours are doing great, I wasn't going to expect that much comb to be drawn out in only a few days. I can imagine how happy you were when you opened them, hope mine do ok.

Well Archer sounds like things are going fine with your bees.  I don't know right off what a quail feeder looks like, I do use a 1 gal chicken waterer to give mine water and sometimes sugar water.  So they don't drown I cover the trough with # 8 hardware cloth left over from building SBB.  Keep up the good work.
