Title: Thought about SHB
Post by: vmmartin on April 18, 2012, 11:21:30 PM
I moved a nuc over to a 10 frame box yesterday and noticed that in the bottom of the nuc the bees had several (5-7) beetles sequestered into a corner of the box.  I was thinking about pressing a wad of propolis into the corner so the beetles could not stay in the corner.  But then again, I would rather them be stuck in the corner than laying eggs in the comb.  Any thoughts on the matter?

How about smash the suckers in the corner and let their bodies be a warning to other beetles?

I did that.  I love the little crunch they make under the swift stroke of my hive tool.  I swear I can hear the bees cheer as I mash the beetles.  It really looks like they enjoy the show.

I smash every one I can.  Haven't had a need for traps yet but probably should invest in some.  For now, space management and migratory covers seem to be keeping them under control for me.  Pride comes before the fall...
