Title: Removing "old dark wax and maybe propolis" from stove top and pot
Post by: beemaster on May 08, 2012, 05:45:38 PM
Hi Gang:

A friend called and asked what is the best wax to remove wax that his son boiled all over the stove top and pot without doing damage to stove top. I believe the pot is aluminum.

The wax was old brittle wax likely with some propolis in the mix too. And good household tips he can put to use right away?? thanks.

Mineral spirits or turpentine will cut the wax.

Elbow grease.   Wax on, wax off.  Put him to work polishing that stove.

At least that is what my old man would made me done.

place brown paper over the wax and put a hot iron on it, Mr. Clean magic erasers work will for smaller spots

When my wax cooking skillet gets too nasty, I use a wood stick as a scraper to get most of the gunk off.  Something with a hardness rating lower than AL or the stove top shouldn't scratch it, but be careful none the less!

This will not help this clean up but when I started beek I went to a 2nd hand store and got a crock pot.  Works good for melting wax, If I need some in a hurry just put it in crock pot removeable bowl and put it in the microwave for a few minutes.  Put it back in the crock pot and turn it on it will stay melted.  When I am dune just unplug until next time.

I use the same thing.
Acetone will clean up the wax & propolis.

I heat mine, spritz it with oil and turn it into "balm," which is easy to wipe out.
