Title: Storeing capped honey frames
Post by: Bee-Bop on May 10, 2012, 02:06:27 PM
Do to illness , I can't work long at one time, I have 8 hives and need to start pulling some boxes before long.
My question,
if I were to put the capped frames and their boxes in sealed plastic bags how long could I hold them before extracting ? ?
Would condensation be a problem for a few days ?

Looks like this will be my last year with the bees, started in 1962 off & on since then.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Sorry to hear that Bee-Bop, I have never tried putting them in bags.  But people put them in the freezer, thaw them back out.  Would there be anyone close by that could help, maybe someone just getting started.  They could learn alot from your experiences and take part of the work off you.  Good Luck, hope you do well.

.
They sty best in the hive.

Not at least in plastic bag. There they get mol and what ever.
Outside the hive frames will chrystallize.

You could ask a friend to help you.

You can keep frames of honey forever as long as some critters don't get them.  I would freeze them.   That would kill out moth and beetle eggs.   When you take them out of the freezer, make sure you let them warm up and dry off before you bag them to keep the mold from starting.

If you want to hold them longer than 24 hours or less..you better freeze them.  Around here, the hive beetles would  ruin it if left much longer.  Even if you sealed them in a bag, you cant know that there are not beetle eggs already in there.

I bag mine first, then freeze them for 3 days. I take them out and stack them in my basement. The day before I extract, I move them into the mobile home where I extract. They keep fine in the basement and warm sufficiently in the mob.
