Title: Bear!!!
Post by: tejones121 on May 16, 2012, 05:01:20 PM
A large bear wrecked my first and only hive last night! I am left no brood, no honey, no queen, and a bunch of angry off bees. What can I do?

why are  you sure you have no queen?  if you find her, you can at least put them back together and feed.

You can drive 250 miles to me and get more bees and woodenware. :D :D

Or salvage what you can and see what you need to complete the hive.

I spent about a half hour collecting pieces of frame, inner cover, outer cover, etc. Bees spread thinly everywhere. Hive body still intact. Did not see the queen. I brushed quite a few back into a new hive with new frames. the came back out about 30 minutes later. they went back in this evening when it started raining. They have no comb now. Just new foudation. Bear did not touch the syrup though?

Brood is protein.   The meat of the hive.

Make sure you post a picture of his reaction to his "surprise" if you catch him! Would love to see it!

Just an update on my wrecked hive. I got a frame of brood from another local beekeeper and put it in the new hive with the leftover bees. It seems to have put them back in order as they are working again. I had the trail camera up ever since the occurence and no return visit. That is until last night, after I took the camera down to delete photos. He came back and turned over some barrels and a trash can. Took the camera down at 9pm and he came 2hrs later. Luckily I had moved the bees out into and open field away from the woods where this guy is travelling.

No I do not have a queen. The frame I got had brood and eggs. I am hoping they will raise a queen.
