Title: Slugs
Post by: antaro on May 22, 2012, 01:13:40 AM
In the past two days the slugs have decided to wage an all out war on my hives. They are gathering on the entrance to the hives and scaling up the outside of the supers. I have no doubt that more than a few have made their way inside.

What kind of damage do slugs do inside a hive? (I have yet to open the deeps and see for myself). Is there an effective way to eliminate this problem?

Stupid slugs.

Honeybee has 32 diseases and pests, but slug is not in that list and it will not be.

It's nice to know the list is finite.  Care to count them out?

I'll start the list.

1.. Humans

As for slugs, cover the ground around the hive with powdered lime. Cheap and effective.

A sprinkle of salt will stop the onslaught, dries them out. :-D

It has been a rough year for slugs, my hives are elevated off the ground surrounded by tree bark ground cover.  Dang wife puts that darn slug bait down all the time, kills them off, but they just keep coming back, too wet here.  At least I only have carpenter ants at mine.

...I've only seen slugs enter our hives once...and (as good fungus eaters), they were after the chalkbrood mummies!
