Title: strange queen behavior
Post by: danno on May 23, 2012, 02:12:53 PM
I have vented inner covers on all my hives and had something very strange happen last night.  I opened the top of one of my hives, a double deep w/ a shallow super set up for cut comb.  It had 1 inch thin surplus starter strips.  The colony had a good population but had not moved up in to the super and started drawing out comb.  There was a single bee in the vented cover that tried to hide under a mouse guard that I store up there.  I knew right away she was a mated queen.  Big fat one.  She was all by herself.  As I tried to pick her up she darted to the center hole and disappeared back in the hive.  Never seen this before. All I can think of is she was hiding from a second queen.  If I'm right they will have to figure all this out

Pretty cool man! Good luck with the outcome.
