If you have a top entrance with a small bottom entrance, how does an excluder above the hive bodies hinder the hive? It would seem that the foragers would have easy access to the supers, not having to pass through the excluder. The queen is trapped below, with no worries of brood in the supers.
Am I over-simplifying the concept?

Yes a top entrance helps the foragers returning with loads of nectar so they dont have to squeeze through the excluder. Its a good idea as long as there is a flow and no robbing going on.

If you have an excluder, the entrance is normally in the frame of excluder.
So drones may come out.
I have in most boxes entrances and there is no danger about robbing.
If a robber goes in, it will meet death on the surface of comb.
