Title: checked nucs today
Post by: salvo on January 13, 2013, 05:57:25 PM
Hi Folks,

Sophomor here. I checked and added stores to my two nucs today. I started them in August.

It was about 50 degrees but overcast, but cold snap coming. I had to do it today.

OK Bluebee, everytime I turn around I'm staring at more honey balls. You and salvo must read the same book.
salvo, what are the shim shingles doing on the front of your nucs?

I learned everything I know about bees from Finland  :)  :-D

Look at the size of the hailstones they get in Massachusetts!

Those are some pretty healthy looking bees there Salvo.  Good job.

I love the ladder idea!  I have an old fiberglass 24' that probably isn't safe to be climbing on anymore.  Looks like I should use it for a nuc bench.

What's the thin boards on the front of your nucs?  A wind break?

Shingles are windbreaks.

I'll be moving my full hives onto the ladder next spring. When I started with two hives, I separated them by 10 feet. I've since learned they do not have to be that far apart. The ladder is on blocks, and I may need a "brace " in the middle. I'll use  simple "scissor jack" for that.

I've modified my beekeeping practices after attending seminars by Michael Bush and Michael Palmer. I'm a little more "laid back" now. "Hey! Whatever works,... and is easy,.... works."

I got poop all down the front of one of my nucs.  Noticed it on my windows too.  It's 35 and fog today and if it wasn't I still would not know what to do for it. Suggestions?

Hi Minz,

I think you may have mis posted in this thread.

Go to "Is this dysentery or nosema?"

They should be able to talk mor intelligently about poop.

Nice to meet you. Give my best to Oregon.

I have no idea how that even got here.  HA, the only way I ever found it again was to go to the replies for my post.  LOL I crack myself up! I would delete it and save myself the embarrassment but I don't know how.
