Title: Mini Hive into a bird feeder w/photo
Post by: newbee101 on November 27, 2005, 08:06:01 AM
I had this mini demonstration hive laying around taking up space, so I turned into a birdfeeder. I made a chute inside so the feed comes out easier.

Where did you get the hive from? The name on the landing board says Lagrants, I've bought bees from them before. They are in Ware, MA, they sell Italians raised in MA and the bees are actually quite good! :D

I bought it used from a local beekeeping store. I glued the hive parts together.

A nice idea. Just hope it does not teach the local birds that they can find food in any structure that looks similar, it could cause problems for other hives in the area.

Someone else made the same point on BeeSource. This feeder is 1/4 the size of a real hive. I only feed in the winter  (not many bees flying). I will have to see how it works out. Thanks for the reply   :)

If I were you, I'd keep it open and get some free bees out of the deal if possible, unless it's a pain in the butt to clean the insides.

Trebor, Swarms = FREE BEES :D
I only feed in the winter & and I plan on putting a swarm lure in one of my trees attached to a pulley, so I can retrieve them easier
