Title: Wet Hive Entrance Tip
Post by: GSF on July 07, 2013, 08:36:44 AM
I was sitting out there yesterday watching my bees. It's been raining off and on the last few days. I kept noticing when my departing bees would do the backflip they would get stuck to the landing because it was wet. Some really struggled. After a few minutes I decided to help them out. I stuck pine needles on the landing so when they landed on their backs their wings wouldn't stick to the board. I covered it just enough so none of them would get a solid contact with the wood.

This is probably old news to some of yall but maybe it'll help others.

Yes, that is common. And the lid will lead the water to the hive. I have seen.
I use separate landing board that it cuts the drill.

Right or wrong, I shimmed my hive ever so slightly, so that the standing water runs away.
Seems to work.

When I make next floors, I make the board slanting. It brings water out in winter and it moves rubbish towards entrance.

Good tip GSF!

I have gone to landing boards that are rough saw and sloped at 12.5 degrees.
