Title: broodless periods
Post by: RHBee on July 30, 2013, 05:56:27 PM
I've read that the broodless period in the fall is brought about by a lack of pollen. So far I have not been able to find out when broodless period in the spring is or what causes it.
The reason I ask is I want to treat for Varroa using oxalic acid vaporization or the trickle method. As stated many times in this forum,  these treatments are most effective when delivered during a broodless state.
I would appreciate any information you may have.

Thanks,
Ray

ray, i don't think we have broodless periods in the south east unless it is in the absolute dead of winter.  i hear that russians will shut the queen down but i don't know if it's true.  you can confine the queen if you want to stop the brood cycle but shutting down the brood cycle is probably good enough by itself.  it will disrupt the life cycle of the mites.

Anyone heard of the HBH drench? Or why not just powder sugar.

I've heard of the HBH drench being used for nosema. Powdered sugar I've heard is ineffective for varroa. Never tried either.

THAT CLAIM IS FALSE. It is 20 y old methiod and very laborous and even dangerous to beek.
Oxaclic acid trickling takes 30 second to execute. Inner cover off and inned cover back.

USA is 15 years behind Europe in mite treatments. No one can help you there.

in spring brood brake comes from lack of pollen. Nothing else.
