Hi folks,
I'm a long-time mead maker but short-time beekeeper from Boulder County, Colorado. I have 1 top bar hive, and plan to build a second and capture a swarm next year. It's my first year, but, I think, a good one. I have had to harvest honey twice so far to allow some room for my ladies and have gotten about 6 quarts of honey (the first harvest was essentially pure linden/basswood, the second a darker polyfloral). If the hive fills up again by fall I may have to harvest 2-3 more bars. And I've got to learn how to make candles this winter!
I look forward to continuing this lifelong journey of learning from the bees (and fellow beeks like you)!
Cheers,
Kirk
Additionally, I am a treatment-free beekeeper. And a smoke-free beekeeper.
I am really enjoying my top bar hive, but am interested in other hive designs like Warre, or even foundationless Langstroth.
Cheers,
Kirk
Welcome to the forum Kirk.
Welcome to the forum, Kirk. I have a TBH also and four Langstroth at the present. I have run some foundationless frames in the langs. It is easier if you have some with foundation in every other slot, or I think so. Good luck to you and your bees.
Joe
welcome
Hello Kirk,
We are in the same neighborhood. I'm located north of you in Loveland. Grew up in Boulder, moved to Loveland several years back.
Have you looked into the Colorado State Beekeepers Association, Or the Northern Colorado Beekeepers Association? Both are great groups with lots of helpful folks.
That being said most of what I have learned I have learned here on this forum.
