Title: Propolis honey??
Post by: Drmaz on February 22, 2014, 08:10:03 AM
I was just checking local honey prices online and I came across these guys http://hellohoney.com.au/2013/11/organic-propolis-honey/ selling "propolis honey". Can anyone tell me what what propolis honey. Of course I know what propolis is as I like chewing on a bit of propolis after doing my weekly hive check. But I can't work out what propolis honey is.

No it's a real thing.

You make a tincture from propolis and 80-90% proof alcohol that dissolves the propolis, filter then stir it into the honey.

Some beekeeping suppliers have a ready solution ready for mixing.

Mixing alcohol/ whiskey into honey takes time and the honey only can take a mix of 1-2% of alcohol to 98-99% honey.

It tastes a bit like cough medicine, I have tried a jar from a beekeeping friend and its perfectly fine

The propolis tincture is made with tasteless grain alcohol

When you start blending a mix of alcohol and propolis into your honey you may open the eyes of the FDA.It is now adulterer honey. You would probably need to be licensed for something like this in the states.

Over here if you produce under a metric ton of honey you don't need to keep documentation.

If you buy honey for resale or if you make flavored honey you have to keep documentation of all transactions to be able to trace a recall notice.
