Title: Out Yards - visit how often
Post by: Stan on February 21, 2006, 04:38:16 PM
What is the norm for visits to a out yard?

Any thing special one should be aware of in setting up a out yard?

Thanks, Stan

There are a few variables as for how often to visit an outyard.  Clearly in winter once every month or two is fine but in the active season, especially durring spring build-up, I'd visit them at least every other week.

You can probably get by with a spring inspection early on a nice day, a trip to head off swarming (two would be better) by putting some space in the brood nest, a trip to pile on the supers for the flow.  A trip to harvest the supers and a fall inspection to make sure things are good.  But if you're learning and these are your only hives, I'd plan on more.

Looking of a location or setting up.

Avoid windy areas, face hives East /south east.  Pref. a location you can drive up to.
