Title: Bee Yard Booming
Post by: blanc on May 07, 2014, 08:56:18 AM
Haven't posted in a while so figure I would poke my head in for a sec. Started out the year with 12 strong hives but due to cold winter stores were very low. At present I have 18 hives due to some swarms and removals I have done in the past couple months. I have had to check my hives every week as of late due to the flow and has kept me pretty busy and could probably harvest some early honey right now if I could find the time. Six of the hives are five high right now and another five are four high. Running all mediums. Did a removal three weeks back and went well but were an aggressive bunch. After a few days in the yard they did not calm down and they stung us and kids and grandkids numerous times. These hives are couple hundred feet from the house in a back field facing away from us. I had to take them out because of the bad genetics and could not chance my other hives getting the nasties. Hated to do it and the first time since started bee keeping had to.  :'( The cooler temps seems to have prolonged the flow so far. Set up a kiddie pool with sponges floating in it to keep the girls out of the nieghbors pools and seems to be working great. Hope all is well with everyone else and BEE HAPPY!
