Title: New memeber, excited to learn!
Post by: kylehertzog on May 18, 2014, 01:11:50 PM
Hey all just wanted to say Hi and thanks to all on this forum.
I have always wanted to keep bees ever since I was a kid, well I'm 28ish now and am living on a acre surrounded by farmland and bordering a tree farm.
We have some animals, rabbits for food, chickens to prepare the land for food and enjoy their eggs. We grow lots of food and medicine so they will bee a welcome sight around here.
Anyways my neighbor (from my house in the city) offered to help fund me if I wanted to get started, I figured the sooner the better with these fast changing times I wouldn't want to wait much longer to do our part.
I have EVERYTHING to learn still and not as much time (to learn) as I like when I go down a venture but I know Bees have a good community not only to them, but to each other as well.

I will start with just a few questions, where do I start? Is there time to get a hive going this year? I could build a toplid\topbar? home in little time so that's not a issues. And I am here almost always so caring for them isn't a issue either (just knowing what to do is).
I will keep spending a hour here and there watching videos and learning when I can, any help and direction is much appreciated!

Something I noticed when I moved to the city as a teen there were hardly any honey bees! Now finally getting back to the land after almost 10 years I would swear I have noticed a decline out here despite having several hives around. I remember finding hives in the woods when I was a kid, now I hunt and run the woods more then ever and I haven't seen a wild hive since!

Thanks guys and gals,
Kyle Hertzog

Welcome to the forum, Kylehertzog.   First you have started, you got the bug and now you are here.  I don't know about being able to get bees this time of the year, maybe.  If not, when you go to the local bee club, someone there may can help.  Once you get a hive and other beek stuff you maybe able to catch a swarm.  Good luck

Joe
