Title: Doing a split
Post by: gdog on June 17, 2014, 12:53:11 PM
I am going to split a large hive and take the nuc 10 miles away. Can I return the nuc after a week or two to the same yard? I will have a new queen for them.

I leave them in the same yard. I put in an extra frame of capped/emerging brood. The flying bees will go home but the nurse bees and the hatching bees consider that home.

You can move the Nuc around 3 miles or so and leave it for a couple of weeks and bring it back to the original bee yard.
Or you can do as Wolfer suggested.
The foraging bees will return to the original hive but the nurse bees will stay with the brood.
Install a Queen Cell or Queen the next day.
