Title: Hive box placement Kansas
Post by: Fergmeister on June 30, 2014, 06:08:41 PM
Hello I'm back.  New house new location for the girls.  New 10 frame foundation brood box to complement the current 10 frame.  The new box goes below correct?  I have a clump of trees to set up in.  Should I be more considerate of summer hot or winter cold.  I know I can insulate the hive with bales and or tar paper.  And I can have the hive in morning sun.  Getting into the 80's at sunrise now.  Comments please??
Chuck

If there are SHB in the area, NO SHADE, ANYTIME.

If you don't have SHB in the area, morning sun and evening shade is fine.

My winter and summer setup is exactly the same. Notch on inner cover to let moist air out and bottom entrance of no more than 3" long.
Some are in partial shade, some in full sun. They are very capable of regulating the temp in the hive unless they have too much ventilation. Even then they can do it they just have to work harder at it.

So then do you have a solid bottom below the screened bottom?  And does anyone pre treat the ground immediatly below the hive placement?

You never want a solid bottom under the screen bottom. It makes the perfect breeding area for wax moths and SHB.
