Post by: LKBruns on July 13, 2014, 06:30:19 PM
I'm using this forum to decide if beekeeping is for me.  I hope to start next spring with a package if bees.

Welcome to the forum, LK, and hopefully to beekeeping, too!!!  I'm a small hobbyist and enjoy working with the bees.  I started with a single small nuc and planned for five total hives.  I'm at eight right now and studying the different methods of making increase.  This will be my third honey harvest.  It's a good hobby...not for everyone, but if you like to tinker and learn things and aren't afraid of getting a sting all along then you will most likely fall in love with it. ;)

Best wishes,
Ed

Welcome to the forum, LK. The first thing we need to inform you is that beekeeping is very addictive. What makes it so great is that there is so much to learn. I always recommend to new bees to read "The Practical Beekeeper" by Michael Bush. I recommend the hard back but it also comes in 3 paperback books, beginner, intermediate and advanced. You can also read all of the same information on his web site but the books have it arranged very nicely.
Hope beekeeping is right for you.
Jim

My biggest concern is that I live in an area with Africanized bees.  I'm not sure how much trouble it is going to cause me

Welcome to the forum, LK.  Sounds like you already have the bug.  You may also want to join your local bee club.  There are lots of videos here and on You Tube.  Good luck

Beekeeping for Dummies was the first book that I read. I think that The Beekeepers Handbook was the second one. Does it have a bright yellow cover and a lot of colored pictures?
My wife bought them for me for my birthday in 2010 and I was hooked.

Another good, general info book for people just starting out is "First Lessons in Beekeeping" authored by Keith Delaplane.  I recommend this one to most everybody interested in beekeeping.  This edition has some very good color photographs unlike some of the previous versions.  Check around, prices vary.

Googling "beginner beekeeper" will also bring up tons of stuff to read. ;)
