Title: Oil Traps
Post by: GSF on July 15, 2014, 10:39:41 PM
I'm needing to buy me some oil traps for two 8f hives. Green bee hives has a 2 week backlog and will be going on vacation after that. Good folks I hate not doing business with them. I can build me some but I don't have the pans or the time. A cut out I did is eat up with SHB - sort of.  I may do the turkey pan trick I saw Ray(?) do. If all else fails I may just take some off of the healthy hives and put it under these for a while. Anyway time's a wasting. Thanks folks.

Trim Coil Stock 24" x 50' roll about $90 at big box store; on may easily fabricate heavy duty oil pans (not flimsy flashing material). I use a section of 2" x 4" with a table-saw kerf width & depth slightly less then the desired depth op the pan. Place 2 x 4 in vise then long side(s) first place trim coil in kerf one cut and then bend, then short sides then maybe rubber hammer to fold leak proof corners then drill & pop rivet folds. $90 is major out lay, consider stock may also be used for telescopic covers as well, maybe get with local beekeeper club members split a roll. The other consideration might be limited source for #6 screen high dollar definitely split cost

Maybe cut down the walls of the pans used for gardening starter cells. The plastic stuff that holds the water when you plant in the upper cups. Just a thought, I have not done it or any other oil trap yet.
