Two things that I "saw" make a difference; Oil traps under the Screen bottom board and direct sunlight. If I see 3 in a hive I would consider it a high number.

Update your profile to include your general location. A lot of bee questions are location specific. Welcome to the forum.

I have tried the oil traps and several other tricks. Most just make a mess.
What has saved m hives from constant serious attacks is Screen Bottom Boards with oil trays. They killed thousands per hive per month. So much that the hives in my yard, I don't have to put oil in the tray all the time anymore. I also use Screen Top Board (STB) to trap bees above the hive.

I use the IPK bottoms from green beehives. Same ones Carol has been having trouble with.
If I see 3 beetles in a hive I know the oil needs to be changed. It has so much crud on it the beetles don't drown.

If I keep the oil changed its rare I see a live one.

GSF... I think I misunderstood your reply. You are saying if you saw 3 in your hives with oil traps you would consider it a high number..... sorry

SC; No harm no foul.

I'm using the same ones that Wolfer is using.
