Title: Obtaining Lemon Grass oil
Post by: flyboy on August 05, 2014, 05:39:01 PM
I am looking to get some Lemon Grass Oil.

On Ebay I see it fairly cheap from SE asia.

Is that a worthwhile choice? is there a better choice?

I go to the local health food store. It is a bit more expensive but you get to support you local business. My only opinion is get PHARMACEUTICAL GRADE or FOOD GRADE oils. Some of the aromatherapy oils and/or candle making oils have solvents and fillers that you and your bees may not like. That is one of the reasons I go the the health FOOD store and not from an unknown source. This is what I am feeding my girls.... I want it to be clean/pure.

Good luck neighbor to my north.

Very good advice. That makes a lot of sense. It's one thing to buy it for yourself but who knows what affects the bees.

I used to travel to a spot close to you in Chelan years ago. Beautiful country!

If you are just going to use it for swarm traps, you would only need a couple of drops per trap.  Best I remember it was $6 for a small bottle at the health food store.  Good luck to you and your bees

 I ordered off Amazon.  (http://www.amazon.com/Lemongrass-Essential-Undiluted-Therapeutic-Grade/dp/B0069SQNIU/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1407359141&sr=8-3&keywords=lemongrass+essential+oil)
It smells so good, I ended up ordering several kinds and an oil diffuser.  Now my room smells awesome.

My wife loves the stuff also. She puts a few drops of it in some holder that has a small light bulb under it... warms it up and smells up the whole house. Sure smells clean but I am always a bit worried that she is going to "lure" some bees INTO the house.... so far so good but I know one day the bees will smell it and come looking for their new home.... She will not be happy when several thousand of my lady friends decide to hang out in HER house.

There's more than lemongrass available. I personally like using 4 or 5 drops of orange with 3 drops of  lime.
