Title: Too late for splits in Mid Tn
Post by: forrestcav on August 30, 2014, 12:30:50 AM
I was wondering. I have one have that I started from a package this year and built up great. I wouldn't consider it till next summer. But they have drawn out the foundation great and when I open the cover they boil out and are bearding on the front. Just weighing options.
FYI they have a SBB.

I wouldnt consider it myself. Give them another box if you are concerned about space. G :chop:

You can also checker board the brood box or the super.

I don't like to do splits after July.  It could probably work but to split now you would have two hives that have really not had time to get established before winter.

Acording to Walt Wright here in Tn:
In late August early September we should get the hives situated the way they need to be for winter, feed if their stores are light and leave em alone so they can store pollen and seal everything up. Check em again after our first frost to make sure that they have nectar in the brood nest. If not feed syrup on warm days.

It is when you place empty frames or foundation in between full frames of honey/pollen. Alternating full-empty-full-empty-full-empty. There is another name that is called opening the brood, which is the same thing, only in the brood box.
