Title: What to do with extracted wax ?
Post by: labradorfarms on September 20, 2014, 03:21:07 PM
Ok I just extracted some honey . I don't have an extractor so I used the crush and strain method. Anyway whats the best thing to do with the left over wax???? If I sit it near the hives will the bees eat it and will it do them any good?

Im debating just rendering it down in a crock poy and selling it.......
Also if I render it down it the honey that's left worth eating?

The bees will lick up any remaining honey.   You will be left with dry wax.   You can then melt it down.

I thought they would recycle it also, so after scraping bur comb, I put it on the inner cover. All they did was start attaching it to the cover and draw more off of it. And they did clean it though.

do NOT put it near your hives. you'll likely start them robbing. set the wax on something that you can retrieve from like a piece of plywood at least 200 feet away from your hives.

They will sometimes move a little wax around inside the hive but not recycle from outside cappings etc.

The crock pot on low will work.  The honey won't be as good but works well for baking, candy etc.

Thanks..  I ended up taking Mr Bushs advice.... I put the honey in a jar for my wifes cooking and put the wax in a ziplock bag to sell. When I get enough.....  Thank goodness I had a old crockpot and pans and such laying around. Cause once that melted wax gets on something its there to stay...
